Filming - 19/01/16

Today I did some filming to redo some interview shots that didn't go so well and to get some new shots and interviews to give the audience an insight to show the audience a different side to the interviewee.

 Overall, there were no technical problems with the equipment but i had difficulties with the boompole which I discovered was broken when filming, as well as difficulties with the camera tripod with which made framing the shot difficult as well as making sure the mic wouldn't fall off the boompole. The scenes in the book shop went smoothly and we were able to do it quickly with no problems on the shoot, although I discovered some of the shots were quite shaky.

Planning - equipment

The equipment I will be using to film the interview will be the same as the previous interview (Panosonic HDC TM700) so there is continuity in the camera quality. In addition to this, my interview also requires quality audio and lighting in order to achieve a good product. To control the audio I will be using Rode NTG 2 and the boom pole, in which these were also used in the previous interview;

Planning - lighting and sound

In the outdoor location shots, I will use natural lighting and so no artificial lighting will be required. In the bookshop location, I will depend on the lighting inside the shop and for the interview location (Jess' bedroom) I will use special lighting on tripods in which will help adjust the lighting quality in which i can adjust the lighting to create the right tone and mood;

Because its a small room I will only need one of these lighting rigs. To get the right lighting effect, I will shine the light onto the ceiling so it creates a good mood and effect.

Planning - Costume and makeup

The costume Jess will be wearing will be normal, everyday clothing to show that she is a normal member associated in society. To keep the continuity in the interview shots, she will be wearing the same outfit as she did in the first draft of the documentary;

In addition to this, in the outdoor shots she will be wearing warm clothing (coat, scarf, etc) as it is cold at this time of year.

The makeup she will be wearing will be similar to what she wore in the previous interview for continuity purposes.

Planning - location

The locations I am using for re-filming are both indoors and outdoors. In terms of interview location, I already have consent from Jess Sharman, as I am using her house for the interview location.

My second location will be at the Old Hall bookshop in Banbury. These shots will be used to show the personal interests of the Cosplayer to show the audience she has interests other than cosplay. I have got verbal permission from the owner of the shop to do this.

filming schedule and plan

On Thursday the 28th of January I will be filming interview shots and also in an outside location. I will be filming in the local town, Brackley, and I will be doing a wider variety of shots and angles during the interview including;

- Medium long shots
- Medium close ups
- side angles (filming from either the left or right of the interviewee)

It will take place after school from 3:05 up until 7:00pm. The locations will include the interviewees bedroom (for the interviews), the streets of Brackley and The old Hall bookshop. For this filming session, only one of the previous interviewees, Jess Sharman, will be needed.

Improvements - incidental music

When making the first draft of the documentary, I used music from royalty free websites to create atmosphere and mood. To improve on what I have already found, I would like to use music covers that people have created from video games as well as attempt at creating my own music on garageband. To give myself an idea of how this would sound with my documentary, I put together some music I found as well as my own music I created in time to the ending of my documentary using Windows movie maker;

Improvements; re-filming

One aspect of my documentary I would like to improve on is the variety of angles the shots have been placed at. As it stands, there are only two angles in my documentary placed at a Mid shot and a Close Up. By using a variety of shots, it gives the audience more to look at when watching the documentary and keeps them interested. In order to achieve this, I will re-film some of the shots used in the documentary using the same actors as before.

Something else I would like to improve on is the narrative. In the documentary, it shows the Cosplayer's engaging in their interest, which is cosplay, but it doesn't reveal their other self in which is the person that is a part of society living their normal everyday lives. I will achieve this by re-filming this with members of my original cast and create a plan of what shots and settings to put them into, as well as costumes, makeup and camera angles. By doing this, it will give more detail to the audience about the Cosplayer's and how they live a normal life.

Target audience research - first draft improvements

I ask my target audience their thoughts on the first draft of the documentary and what improvements can be mad to make it better;
